Ma'at is the ancient Egyptian goddess and philosophical principle of truth, justice, cosmic order, and reciprocity. For over 3,000 years, she was Egypt's moral compass — the standard against which every action, every ruler, every law was measured.
In the Hall of Two Truths, the heart of the deceased was weighed on the scales of Ma'at against her feather — a feather representing moral rightness. A heart aligned with truth and justice would balance the scales. One heavy with wrongdoing would not, and passage would be denied.
